Arapaho Peaks

Sara and I tried to go to North Arapaho Peak today, but due to rain, had to settle for views of the Arapaho Glacier.

We saw (and heard) this waterfall from across the valley:

We met several marmots on the way up, but this one was the most interesting (and bravest; I got to within 6 feet of it before it moved away):

Here's Sara with South and North Arapaho Peaks behind her just before a cloud swooped in and hid South Arapaho Peak from us:

And here she is with Arapaho Glacier in view.

Chautauqua

I went to Chautauqua tonight for an orchestra/piano concert. First, I met up with Harald, Tomtor, and Roya for a pre-concert picnic.

A couple more of Roya's friends showed up later. Those five had tickets for the concert, so I went to find a seat outside to listen.

As soon as I sat down, I saw Ryan, an old friend of mine from Georgia Tech. My first semester at Georgia Tech, Ryan was my TA for a computer science class, and was also in my Introduction to Modern Physics class. He was a physics major at Tech (like I eventually became), and he's now a grad student at CU. He and Jamie invited me to sit with them.

I enjoyed catching up with him, as well as listening to the concert

and watching the moon set.

Basal Cell Carcinoma

As I suspected two weeks ago, I have basal cell carcinoma.

I've been keeping Vaseline and/or A&D ointment on it, which supposedly helps prevent scarring. I will have it removed August 12.

Cheyenne Frontier Days

I went with John, Harald, Julie, Donna, and Ilana today to the Cheyenne Frontier Days. In this picture, Julie and Donna are wearing their new hats; Harald has yet to buy his.

At the rodeo, we saw many events, including bareback bronco riding,

bull riding,

and the wild horse race.

The funniest part was when this little horse was supposed to run down the straightaway in front of the grandstand, but instead ran the other way. The handlers tried to chase after it to turn it around, but it never did. The horse was so small, it reminded me of a pig.

Death Cab for Cutie at Red Rocks

I went to Red Rocks for the first time last night! We left work a little early so we could eat dinner in the park. Here are Josh, Kanako, Sara, Julie, Armin, and Nick around the picnic table:

We had to walk through this tunnel to get from the picnic area to the venue. It looks like Rich was the only one ready to have his picture taken:

We missed the first opening act, but got to the venue in time to see the second opening act, Andrew Bird (who I saw in February). You can just make out the same double-gramophone he used on stage.

The amphitheater was as nice as advertised.

Armin took this picture of Julie, me, and two rainbows.

We couldn't have asked for a better night to watch an outdoor concert!

Google maps shows the amphitheater and our little picnic area atop Plains View Rd.

New Camera

I got a new camera recently.

It's a little smaller than my old one, and it boots up much faster!

I took a picture of Roya, Julie, and Harald at lunch today:

And here's one of Sara and Karli in Sara's front yard:

Sunday Brunch

This morning, Sara and I went over to Julie's place to hang out by the pool. Later in the morning, we went to the South Side Walnut Cafe for brunch. Julie took this picture of my iced Americano after I added cream, but before I stirred it in.

I always like how that looks.

Here is the picture I took of Julie and Sara:

more Louisville Summer Concert Series

I went tonight to see the Invaders, a 60s-style surf band. Unfortunately, the city had just mown the lawn, and once again my allergies got the best of me, so I left after half an hour.

Andy took this picture of me. You can see the shadow of his large, almost sombrero-like hat, but not his loud orange Hawaiian shirt!

Biopsy

I have had this little splotchy, bumpy area on my face for over a year. If you look close, you can see it about half-way between the corner of my mouth and the left edge of the picture.

I went to the doctor this morning, and he performed a biopsy. I'll know the results in about two weeks. I had to walk around all day with this gigantic bandage on the side of my face.

I have to keep Vaseline on it for the time being so it doesn't dry out. At worst, it looks like it will be basal cell carcinoma, which generally only poses a problem if left untreated for years and years.

In other news, I also refinanced my townhouse today, and played tennis (for the first time this year) after work with Carsten and Ken.

Dave Mason

I saw Dave Mason play at the Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom in Denver Friday night.

Even though he's 63, his voice sounds the same as it did in the '70s.

On the way home, it started raining. By the time I got to Louisville, it was raining as hard as I've ever seen it rain! I got drenched running from my garage to my front door.

The storm was the red blob to the east of South Boulder.
