More trivia success

Two more trivia victories, giving us four in a row, and five of the last six!

Trivia success

We've come in first in trivia two of the last three weeks.

I think it has something to do with fewer questions aimed at children of the 1990s.

Interesting things from the past two weeks

Two weekends ago, I went to an ATM, where I got this twenty dollar bill:

Henry Fowler was the Secretary of the Treasury from 1965-1968!

I took a hearing "baseline" test at work, which pretty much told me what I already knew: I have some hearing loss:

Last week, (L to R) Tara, Greg, Tara, me, and Trevor did so-so at trivia.

That same night, it snowed (which I already blogged about).

Since Cora couldn't make it that night, I went with her and Trevor to trivia the following night, as well!

All that trivia appears to have paid off, because this week, we won!

This time, it was (L to R) Tara, Trevor, Cora, me, and Anne.

In almost an exact replay of the previous week, it snowed again (!) Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. Wednesday was cloudy and cold, and I didn't take any pictures. This morning, I did. All around NOAA the snow had what looked like hoar frost on it. According to Wikipedia, this is called surface hoar frost.

Green Mountain and the flatirons looked cool, as they usually do after it snows:

Finally, the steam coming from the building was so thick it cast a strong shadow!

Last Week+

At trivia two weeks ago, we finally had our full team back together (L to R, Ann, Trevor, Tara, me, Cora), but we just missed out on placing.

A week and a half ago, I had an angle-wing katydid land on my office window!

I think it was the first time I'd seen one since I blogged about the one I saw back in 2008: http://jeffonthenet.blogspot.com/2008/09/angle-wing-katydid.html

We came in third in trivia this week, breaking our drought. Pictured (L to R) are Ann, Trevor, me, and Tara:

This weekend, the weather was perfect. I had coffee with Sara and Rich at Bittersweet Saturday morning:

While drinking our coffee, we were treated to a B-17 flying overhead:

The enjoyed the weather even more once I found out it is supposed to snow this Wednesday!

Trivia and Bees

Tuesday's trivia team (R to L, Tara, Cora, Anne's arm, Anne, and me) did OK, but we still haven't placed in awhile.

I saw some nice sunset leftovers leaving work on Wednesday.

Friday night, I saw the movie Queen of the Sun with some coworkers, which inspired me to take pictures of bees on my way downtown Saturday morning. The bees seemed to move a lot faster in real life than in the movie, so I wasn't able to get any really good pictures of bees front and center. This was probably the best:

The Past Two Weeks

Two weeks ago was somewhat cursed. Our (shorthanded) trivia team finished far out of first place,

and after riding my new bike for the first time (to downtown Louisville), I got a flat tire!

This past week was better. Our trivia team came in fourth place,

but it was still a little cursed, because we either misheard a question, or it was misread, and it ended up costing us third (maybe even second) place.

Friday night, I caught Choosing June playing behind the Bittersweet Coffee Shop.

Saturday morning, I met up with (at various times in the day) Andy, Rich, Sara, Josh, and Harald. I fed some birds

and Rich pointed out that the plant that was growing on the outside of the building is still growing on the inside!

I still haven't fixed my flat...

Trivia and Thunderstorms

Last night, we teamed up with two new people. We finished 7th, which wasn't bad, considering we had probably our worst last round ever. Left to right are Sarah, me, Tara, Cora, Anne, and Jonathan.

Last night, on the way home from trivia, there were several thunderstorms providing nice displays of lightning. The same thing happened tonight, so this time I stopped to take pictures.

Boulder and the faintest remains of twilight:

I couldn't quite capture the lightning from the storm to the north. The orange glow from the lightning was more impressive in person.

The storm to the south was a lot closer. I took this picture walking back to my car:

None of my pictures turned out as well as some that I took back when I lived in New Mexico:

With my old camera, I could do time lapse photography, which definitely helped!

Trivia

We didn't do so well at trivia this week -- 7th place for Greg, Tara (a coworker), me, Cora, and Trevor.

The highlight of the night came when Cora won eyeball bandages for answering a bonus question correctly.

Trevor was excited for the non-bandage eyeball sticker:

On the way to trivia Tuesday night ...

as Cora, Trevor and I were walking down the street, Trevor spotted two birds on the peaks of roofs:

One was real:

The other wasn't:

We came in second place!

Not bad, considering we thought we had no shot because we were in 9th, then 10th place after the first two scoring breaks.

Tuesday

Tuesday, with Anne back in town, we went to trivia for the first time in about a month. On my walk there (now with sunlight again!) I took some pictures of clouds.

This one is an optical illusion for me -- when I uploaded the photo and looked at it again I thought the dark clouds appeared tiny and close:

For a few days in a row it was cloudy over the mountains and as the sun was setting, it lit the bottoms of those clouds with a soft orange color:

Trivia-wise, we came in sixth place.

Back in Colorado

The temperature difference between Sydney and Denver was about 100 degrees! It was a little hard at first getting used to winter again.

My first trivia was last Tuesday, when Cora, Trevor, and I formed a skeleton crew that managed to place third (thanks in large part to Trevor's knowledge of Nu Metal).

Yesterday, I went skiing for the first time this season. I didn't bring my camera, but Rich did, so maybe I can borrow some of his pictures. Unfortunately, our day ended a little early when Sara hurt her knee. She should get the results of her MRI tomorrow. I'm hoping it's nothing serious!

UPDATE: Unfortunately, the first doctor Sara went to said she has a torn ACL.

Recap of the last two weeks

In case you were wondering, the fire fizzled overnight, and was mostly contained by the next day.

The night before the fire, I took this sunset picture (with my new favorite tweaks, a gamma correction of 0.7 and a saturation of 70 to make it look more like it did through my eyes):

The day before Halloween, I spent a lot of time in downtown Louisville -- first with Sara and her family for coffee and shopping at the Hatch New Mexico chile store, featuring a chile roaster out front, which smelled great:

Then I bumped into Tara and Jason at another coffee shop, then I saw Josh finish the Monster Dash:

For Halloween, I went out to dinner with Jason, Roya, and Harald.

We walked around Pearl Street afterward to check out the costumes.

Last week, we came in third place in trivia:

For awhile, we were over the 6-person player limit, so John played by himself. He came in last place.

Last Tuesday morning after voting, I saw this picture of Louisville in the city hall:

A lot of the same features are still around today, such as Miner's Field:

The moon on my way into work that morning:

My camera is terrible at taking picture of the moon at night, but this makes a nice companion piece to the one above:
